I mentioned in a previous post that we had booked a short break in the UK for March. It was the first holiday for about 8 years and we were really looking forward to it. We arrived at Holme Lacy, a Warner's hotel near Hereford on Monday lunchtime. It has been our 'go to' hotel for a number of years, including for my 60th birthday (was it really 16 years ago??) when we went for an antiques break and met the expert Eric Knowles. He is a lovely man π
There were two quizzes a day which we joyfully took part in and laughingly only scored around half marks π Nonetheless, we enjoyed it.
The food was hot, well cooked and plentiful although we much preferred the Market Kitchen buffet to the Bistro table service, and we partook of a cooked breakfast each morning. Absolutely, delicious !
-------------
Our downfall was, as expected, sleeping in the same room for the first time in 8 years. Neither of us sleep well and I'm often up in the early hours, maybe 2 -3am making a hot water bottle or a cup of tea. Gray snores and is very restless because of his neck problem. We had booked a 4 night stay, Monday to Friday, but gave up on Wednesday evening and decided to cut it short by a day and return home on Thursday after breakfast.
The sad realisation is that it was to be our very last holiday ever π Getting no sleep is no joke and it's simply not worth it. Sad but true.
---------------
Thanks for popping in. Stay safe and well in our troubled world.
Love,
Angie π

I empathise. We, well I actually, had exactly the same realisation after our short break last autumn. For various reasons it wasn't a success and we also, like you, came home a day early. There'll be no more holidays for us, sadly.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, Sooze, its aging which is the problem for us. Im so sorry you've had the same experience.
DeleteWe have one big trip a year and don't know how many more we can manage. The 25 hours of airports is wearing us out.
ReplyDeleteOther half just turned 72, so there is that to factor in as well.
I don't think we could manage airports now either. Our destination was just 90 minutes away which was enough travelling time for us. Personally I wouldn't even drive that far. Gray always drives.
DeleteI guess self-catering with two bedrooms would be an idea - but then having a break from cooking etc wouldn't happen - which would be no fun!
ReplyDeleteThat's true. I did enjoy the no cooking and washing up aspect of the holiday ☺️
DeleteWe now limit how far we will drive, we are OK with the coach to London, age does bring limitations. PS, we often take our own pillows.
ReplyDeleteThe pillows were certainly not helping us to sleep, Marlene, they were too firm.
DeleteOh I am so sorry for you. It is the same for us as I get up and down to the loo and my Husband snores very badly plus he gets really hot and I feel the cold. We haven't had a holiday for a long time and this April we are going to Amsterdam for 5 days with one of our sons. My Husband and I are sharing a twin bedded room and I have ear plugs so I hope we will be ok! So sorry you had to come home early but I think as we get older it is harder to adapt to changes in our routines and home comforts. I can't cope with airports any more but can manage Eurostar. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteSo sorry that you feel it too. Earplugs might have been a good idea! I haven't been on a plane for almost 25 years and have never used Eurostar either. Your trip to Amsterdam sounds lovely, Sue, I really hope that you love it :)
DeleteI was sorry to read you had to cut your holiday short. Although I don't sleep well, OH does and he doesn't snore. The only problem is he hogs the duvet. We still enjoy our holidays and always share the driving, but going abroad is out now, as I won't fly and we decided that driving through France is too much. Plus I haven't found a pillow yet that's right. Take care. Xx
ReplyDeleteI dont fancy going abroad now, Gill, we haven't done it since 2001. We can't drive far either. Im too nervous a driver and Graham's neck is a problem. We are scuppered!
DeleteSorry you needed to cut your holiday short. Neither of us sleep well the first day or two in a new bed so touring can take a great deal out of us. What you did manage sounds like a blast.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
We did enjoy it but just got more and more tired after having so little sleep , then just gave in and came home.
DeleteThe hotel has a lovely games room. I don't travel but I enjoyed reading your post and your photos are beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing, and warm greetings from a 69 year old retired lady living in Montreal, Canada ❤️ π π¨π¦
ReplyDeleteHello Linda! πThank you so much for your kind comment. I hope you are well x
DeleteThe hotel sounds like a lovely place to stay. I'm sorry you had to cut the holiday short by a day. But, maybe you can still have a holiday if you book separate rooms? Might be something to consider?
ReplyDeleteWe did think about separate rooms but there is a hefty price hike for solo occupancy. It would have been really expensive , sadly.
DeleteWe went to Holme Lacey in May 2023 and loved it. Ours was a 'tribute acts' weekend stay and we had a lovely time. But at our age sleep is a very necessary thing to enable the days to be enjoyable isn't it. I agree with you the Market Kitchen dining area is so much better than the bistro food. We both loved the breakfasts especially.
ReplyDeleteThe entertainment is usually very good isn't it. We had a young Michael Buble type soloist with an excellent voice on one night.
DeleteWe loved the breakfast too. So much choice and piping hot. We indulged in cereal and then a cooked breakfast to last us all day until dinner π
Market Kitchen was much more relaxed.
