Whatever Happened to Sense of Community? & Vegging Out

One day last week we had to pop out on a few errands and Graham took a phone call from a friend of his that he used to work with.  N had decided to drop in to see our new bungalow as he's looking to move himself.  On finding no-one at home he thought that maybe he had the wrong house and nipped up the road to another bungalow to enquire which home was ours.  Well...the husband answered the door and said he had never heard of Graham & Angela πŸ˜•and N drove home disappointed.  Well.....when the couple moved in 4 years ago I popped a 'Welcome to your new home' card through the door, followed by Christmas cards 2 years running all with our names and house number on.  They didn't reciprocate with Christmas cards so I stopped sending them in case they were not celebrating Christmas for some reason.  I've taken in parcels for the man too in the past.  When you look out of my bedroom window, their home is the second bungalow on the left with a white car outside, so they are not a million miles away !

When we got home, I must confess that I went straight up to the bungalow to remind him of who we are (politely and with a smile, of course) but I'm sure N thought we had lied about where we lived!  The neighbour was totally unapologetic 😏 If N had asked anyone else in our street they would have confirmed where we live too.  Good grief....

Is your part of the country neighbour friendly?

In 2025 we decided to try to get more veg into our meals.  The Sainsbury's summary of our shopping shows 1,216 portions were purchased last year.  Considering we grow and eat stuff from the allotment during 2/3 of the year as well, there is a definite improvement 😁

.... and we do eat a lot of baked beans !....

How do you get more veg into your meals?  I can't eat lentils because they just don't agree with me but other suggestions are most welcome !

Thanks for popping in folks.  Do stay safe wherever you happen to be,

  1. Through the cooler months we gave home made soups using loads of veg, there are so many different flavours to be made.

  2. I grate veg into tomato based sauces to disguise them for granddaughter (she doesn't do mushrooms/onions) and we eat a lot of veg soup. Regarding neighbours, at our last house, we had each other's keys, would put bins in/out, take parcels in, swop plants. But here, because its a new build estate and younger people, so more out at work, we don't know as many people in the same way. But people stop and chat which is nice. Xx

    1. Isn't it a shame how things have changed, Gill. This is a new development here but lots of folk still work from home post Covid and still know nothing about the neighbours.
Luckily a few of ours do have a chat with us on the rare occasions we see them in the street and we share our allotment produce with them in the summer too.
      Have a great week xx

  3. Our neighbours speak if I speak first. I've been here nearly 23 years but would only consider the lady across the road to be a friend. And in truth it's always me that invites her over. She never reciprocates. I throw absolutely any veg into soup or fritatta.

    1. That is rather sad isn't it. Not like it used to be.

Oh, yes! Frittata! I'd forgotten about that. Thank you ...

  4. We are pretty much the last of the old guard on our street and I doubt very much our neighbours know who we are. Not sure how to go about changing that and I sometime wonder if I really want to. This is one of the reasons we would actually be okay with moving to the city our youngest son lives in. And the strange thing is I have many friends living there already.

    God bless.

    1. Funnily enough most of the other neighbours know us. We share our allotment produce with them in the summer months. This particular couple are a bit strange and don't talk to anyone in the street πŸ€”

  6. I'm sorry your neighbors couldn't or wouldn't confirm where you lived, however, the way things are over here, especially now, I would never confirm where a neighbor lived to a stranger. I know a few of my neighbors, but, only a few of them know my name. :)
Well done with all the vegetables in your diet!

    1. He genuinely didn't know who I was when I rang his door bell, despite putting out his rubbish bin opposite our house for the last 4 years!
      He's a strange man....

  7. We got to know all our neighbours where we are now within a month or so of moving here, it's a really friendly cul-de-sac. We all exchange Christmas cards and chat out on the street, but we're not the sorts to invite each other round, although we do support each other through tough times. We now also know half a dozen of our soon-to-be neighbours, mostly due to us apologising for all the workers vans and occasional disruption. I think we will be delivering a few bunches of flowers once we move in.

I get extra vegetables into me by making soups and curries and whizzing them up, I do like a smooth soup or sauce.

    1. Oh how lovely to have neighbours like that and I would like to have you as one of mine too πŸ˜€ You and Alan are considerate neighbours and we could gave a jolly good chin wag !!
Yep, I think more soups will be on the menu πŸ˜‹

  8. We have three new neighbours across the road and are just getting to know them. At the very least, we all know each others faces. Hubby helped one of them out when we had the snow. We get on well with both our adjacent neighbours. I think we are very blessed and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. That neighbour of yours does see a bit odd.
Soups and casseroles are the way I try to add more veg rather than have them separate.

Yesterday (Thursday) was another wet day but I wanted to drop some more cards off at the shop; another 17 to make a total of 69 this year....
