On Saturday afternoon, after moping indoors since breakfast, we decided to venture to Sainsbury's for a few fresh veg despite the rain still pouring down. I had a fancy for some cauliflower or broccoli 🥦 🤔 The shelves were bare......
There wasn't a single cauli nor head of broccoli to be seen. OK...maybe cabbage?.... the only two specimens available can be seen in the bottom right hand corner. They were limp and uninspiring so I left them there. A lot of the produce is such poor quality at the moment. I bought a bag of baby Cornish new potatoes in my Wednesday delivery and when I opened them there was the unmistakable smell of rotting potato 🥵 I emptied them all out, disposed of the rotten ones, rinsed and dried the others and put them away. This morning yet more had perished so 2 more in the bin before I could prepare lunch.

Is there no end to rising prices? During the week Gray decided he would like a lunchtime pint in the local pub as the weather was so wet and depressing. A pint and a standard glass of white wine was...... £9.95 👀 It's a really lovely pub with a welcoming atmosphere and an open fire in the winter but it will be the last visit for a while. I really can't afford to spend my whole week's discretionary spending on one drink.....
....and another small batch of cards for the Hospice shop is ready to be dropped off.

Goodness the empty veg shelves do look sad. I've not seen things that bad here............yet.
ReplyDeleteWhenever my mum talked about fish and chip prices she would say that in the 1930's they asked for 2 and 1 please - which was tuppence worth of fish and a pennies worth of fish!

DeleteYes, I have noticed a lot of gaps in the fruit and veg sections, as well as on some grocery items in the supermarkets just recently.
ReplyDeleteIn the early seventies the only thing I could afford to get from the chip shop was a potato scallop or a jumbo pickled onion, both 2p each. Even back then we couldn't afford fish and chips.
Yes, I have noticed a few empty fruit and veg shelves lately. We don't drink in a pub setting much but I am shocked at the prices. As for fish and chips, that is becoming almost as extinct as the dinosaurs. I do sometimes cook my own at home but I would much rather have them from the chippy.
ReplyDeleteI am afraid that prices are rising over here, too. With federal immigration officers chasing migrant farm workers down the fields (as shown on TV news), I wonder who will pick the fruits and vegetables that are sold in the supermarkets? Maybe we will have empty grocery shelves pretty soon, over here, too?
