The Last of the Crops

It's getting quite cold at night now so I was surprised that the cucumbers are still surviving
in the greenhouse.  Not only surviving, but producing cucumbers.   I decided to pick the best of them before they spoil;  the one on the left here....

....and the one on the right below.....

I can't bear to pull up the plant and dispose of it yet, so I'll wait and see if the other cucumbers mature or die off first.  So far we have had 22 off one plant.

The last couple of peppers are still green but, similarly, I  don't want them to spoil and have snipped them off.   They won't be as sweet but are still edible.  We have harvested 12 sweet yellow peppers off one plant.....

It always seems sad 😔 when the last of the crop is finished don't you think?  At the allotment on Thursday we pulled the last of the carrots from a raised bed.  They have been washed, dried, and should last the week for meals.  We have one more bed of carrots remaining then they will be gone too 😔
Our sprouts have totally failed to produce at all and have gone on the compost heap.  It looks like there will only be leeks now, that's assuming they actually take off!

Do you grow anything through the winter months?

Thanks so much for popping in.  Do stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,
Angie 💗

PS:  forgot to mention that we have our covid boosters booked for Saturday morning 😳
Aaarrgh !

  1. OH gets his flu and Covid on Saturday. I only get my flu as I'm not old enough for the Covid, so I've booked to have it next week privately - £98! Xx

  2. I don't think I'm eligible for the covid shot and I have wait until late November for the flu vaccination.
I'm not growing any winter veg this year as the cabbage whites put paid to the tenderstem broccoli.

    1. We're not growing much during the Winter because we often can't face going out in bad weather to tend it. What a shame about your broccoli.

  3. My Dad would never let us pick sprouts until they had been froster-numb fingers trying to chop off a stem. I bought some Scottish ones on Tuesday and they were delicious. May have some more tonight-yum. Catriona

    1. I love sprouts and they definitely taste better after a bit of frost. Must look out for some Scottish ones!

  4. I still have carrots, potatoes and a couple cauliflowers. I have planted broad beans, leeks, onions and mixed brassica. Carrots are in tubs as well. My tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers all failed in the greenhouse. We both get our jabs tomorrow.

    1. Wow, you still have loads of veg!
Hope the jabs went well, Marlene.

  5. Wow, 22 cucumbers off one plant! That's amazing! I tried to grow cucumber this year and nothing happened! I'm lucky I can grow vegetables year round. In fact, my daughter put together a raised bed, today, and she and my gardener M will plant some winter vegetables (chard, carrots, snowpeas, etc.), starting next week.

    1. The cucumber plant is called Passandra and always seems to perform well. How lovely to grow veg all year round!

  6. I think a lot of people have had disasters with their sprouts which is a pity. We love sprouts but don't grow them, not enough room in our small garden. It is sad to clear away the garden in the autumn. We have had good crops of runner beans, tomatoes and cucumbers (not as many as your mega plant wow!), still harvesting chillies but we had one pepper plant which didn't crop well, I think it was attacked by something, the foliage looked all crumpled and the peppers were very small and wrinkly. 7. You have done brilliantly well with your cucumber plant this year, 22 off one plant is great, and think of the money you've saved buying cucumbers, they're not that cheap anymore.

I've grown things in the past over Winter, this year I am just thinking of putting in some onion sets, not too many but a few homegrown onions next Spring would be good, and of course they need minimal effort.

    1. Yes, Sue, onions are always useful to have. The cucumber plant is Passandra. We had two last year and will buy the same again next year too. It's amazing !
