Home Grown Figs & September Expenses

We have had some lovely sunny days over the last week.  Yes, it's been cold at night as well as first thing in the morning but, once the mist has dissipated, the sun has shone beautifully.  I knew that we had some small figs on the tree but didn't really expect them to ripen .....

..... so I was pleasantly surprised to find these last Saturday.....
😊

I cut them in half lengthways, drizzled them lightly with golden syrup ( I had no runny honey) and baked them in the oven for a few minutes as the oven was on to cook lunch anyway.  Served with a scoop of ice cream they were absolutely delicious.  I didn't realise that you can eat the skin but it was so tender after baking that eating it wasn't an issue!

-------------

A week after my blood test my arm is still bruised.....

Doesn't it take an age to heal as you get older? 😕

------------

As we have had such an expensive month with special birthdays and such, we didn't have a September treat so I'm hoping we can have an October one before the bad weather really sets in.  I'm not sure what we can do.  Maybe Dudley Zoo or Severn Valley Railway?

We have the Swindon Gardening Club meeting this Friday (£5.50 each) plus the Gardeners' Guild meeting next Tuesday (£3.00 each) so need to watch our spending this month too.

---------

Right now I'm waiting for the heating engineer to come and service the boiler.  I think we need inhibitor in the system too so I'm not sure how much it will all cost.  The service alone is around £80 👀 I'll let you know how much it finally comes to.

----------

Thanks for popping in.  Stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,

Angie 💗

  1. Lovely to have some figs this late in the year, they are a completely different shape to mine so must be a different variety. Mine finished many weeks ago.
I shall try baking them next year as it sounds good

  2. After a busy September and with a busy November looming, we are hoping for a quiet October. Hope the bruise is healing quicker.

    1. We've never grown any before, Ang, so I was really pleased to get these. I must remember to check the variety. I'm sure the label is still attached ....

  5. Alan has a few figs on his tree at the moment, he's hoping they ripen before the frost gets them. Yours look perfect.

Aww, your poor arm, I never bruise after blood tests etc, but I do find that I bump myself regularly and think 'I must remember how I did this one', but by the time a bruise appears I rack my brains and can't remember at all. :-)

    1. Gray doesn't usually have a mark at all after a blood test. I must be a 'bleeder'! I can never remember bumps and scrapes either, apart from the recent bump on the head where I had the scar to prove it ...lol..

  6. I love figs how wonderful you have had some off your tree. It's been a good year for figs growing and ripening in the UK apparently. Where my youngest son lives in Brighton there is a huge fig tree growing against a south facing wall and he has had pounds of fruit, yummy. Your poor arm, I bruise very easily too, they take ages to fade don't they? I love Dudley Zoo my Dad used to live quite near there many years ago when he remarried a lovely lady from Dudley. My boys used to love a trip to the zoo. Nice to have something to look forward to. Take care Sue H

    1. I was born in Dudley, Sue, and Zoo trips were a regular occurrence with my cousin on a Saturday afternoon. I'd be about 12 or 13 and we'd go and spend our pocket money there :) Unfortunately, I haven't been back for years but they now have an extensive breeding program for endangered species. We really must go !
How lucky your son is with loads of luscious figs to enjoy :)

  7. Homegrown figs must taste wonderful! I've tried growing figs, but, the plants kept dying. They require more watering than I a prepared to do, I think.

    1. Sorry, that should be "...I am prepared to do"!

    2. To be honest, Bless, I did forget to water them sometimes so how they survived is a miracle. They are facing south and the wall gets very hot in summer.

  8. Those figs look absolutely divine. Baking them with golden syrup sounds like such a simple but indulgent treat. I hope you manage to squeeze in a little October outing despite the expenses. It sounds like you’ve earned it. And yes, bruises do seem to linger longer as we get older; patience is the hardest part.
