Eating in Season

I don't like the heat at all, but I love this time of year for all the home grown fruit and veg that nature provides us with.  We are still picking, eating

 (and freezing) :

Green beans

Tomatoes

Yellow peppers

Cucumbers

Potatoes

Carrots

Onions

Bramley apples

Dessert apples (Russet type)

Raspberries

And we have been given (by other allotment friends):

Victoria plums

Cherry tomatoes

We have, of course been giving stuff away to family, friends and allotment neighbours too.

If the local badgers hadn't got there first, there would have been sweetcorn as well.  We managed to retrieve just one cob which they had missed in the middle of the bed, and it was delicious.  Sweet and tender with just a little butter...mmm

We haven't bothered with cabbages and such this year,  as we don't eat much of them, and it's a good job we didn't spend money on the seedlings this time.  Brassicas and such have failed spectacularly at the allotment. Seasoned growers have been really disappointed with results.  Our one surviving Brussels sprout plant has developed club root and has had to be pulled up and burned.

Oh well, you can't win 'em all, can you 🫣

Today,  Wednesday,  we have had a little rain, thankfully.   It has rained on and off for a couple of hours.  Still not enough....but it helps.

Are you still picking crops from your garden?

Have you had rain in your area?

_________

Thanks for popping in and stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,

  1. Runner beans are doing well, soft fruits have also been good. I am now thinking about over winter crops.

  2. We had rain overnight on Monday, with an enormous clap of thunder about 7 am. Then today we have showers on and off. We've only grown tomatoes, cucs and french beans this year. Good pickings from all but the cucumber skins are very tough. I've taken my hanging basket down as it had got very leggy and was going crispy brown, not re-planting it yet. Pansies don't seem right at the end of August somehow. Xx

  4. Still waiting for rain here in Mid Suffolk.
Apples, maybe a couple of dozen all told, are going to be early.

  5. Apples were early, and mostly fell off the tree before I could get to them. But some left. I've two tubs of potatoes, grown from Albert Bartlett shop bought baking potatoes, to investigate, one spaghetti marrow and three lettuces left...

  6. The peppers look truly wonderful. What a pity about the sweet corn at least you got to try one! We are still harvesting runner beans and have frozen lots. We are inundated with courgettes and have resorted to leaving basket loads at the front of the house with a help yourself notice, which thankfully folks are doing. Tomatoes are just about finishing. We don't have an allotment and don't grow much in the garden just what we can manage. We did get a little rain but need so much more. Regards Sue H

  7. We are still picking tomatoes, courgettes, spring onions and rhubarb. Alan picked half the apples off the tree before we left as the tree was buckling under the weight of them.

In a way I think it was almost worse to get one good sweetcorn cob ... it just shows you what you have missed. Pesky badgers. ☹️

  8. Your peppers look so fresh and lovely. So sorry you only got one ear of corn to enjoy. I'm picking Asian pears from my garden, right now, and the butternut squash look just about ready to be picked, too. I'll have some corn to pick, soon, and I hope there will be some okra to enjoy, later.
It doesn't really rain here in the summer. We don't expect any rain until sometime in October.

  9. You are still getting lots of lovely crops from your allotment, Angie. What beautiful and fresh peppers you have grown. We are still cropping tomatoes here in abundance. I hope those naughty badgers enjoyed your sweetcorn. They must have known how deliciously sweet they would be.
    Have a lovely weekend.

A Storm, August Food Spend , & Reading Matters

At last we have had the rain we craved.  The weekend was wet and windy, and gave the garden a thorough soaking, although the wind had taken...
