A Warm Welcome & Speaking of Antiques

Our local council ( the parish council, I think)  has opened a Warm Welcome space in a room at the Civic Centre.  It's open from Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm and not only is it lovely and warm in temperature, but the volunteers are friendly and offer free tea, coffee, hot chocolate or cup-a-soup to any visitors.  Yesterday, we decided to try it.  The weather was damp and miserable and so dark we needed the lights on.  We both felt sluggish so took a short drive to the venue.  It was amazing and just the place for lonely people to have a bit of human contact.  There were books to read, boxed games, a puzzle board and even a pool table.  As well as beverages they do pot noodles, fish paste sandwiches, toast, and biscuits.  All are FREE.  Graham and I gratefully accepted toast and coffee and had a lovely chat with some of the people there.  Apparently, Sainsbury's donate some of the items like bread and biscuits, they do have a collection box for a kitty for milk but no payment is actually expected from anyone.  We dropped a few coins in, of course, but the 2 lady volunteers were indispensable.  Where would the UK be without volunteers?  The room is open until the end of March so we will definitely go again.

This afternoon we have the Wednesday Club and the speaker will be talking about antiques and collectables.  That will be right up my street.  Tea / coffee and a biscuit will be included  and for just £3 each too 😀 We know how to live it up! 😂

Thanks for popping in.  Stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,

Angie 💗

  1. Happily our little town is full of 'Warm Spaces' all through the Winter each year. The churches and various centres all do one half day a week each, so that there is always somewhere for folk to get to. Sadly I don't think they do Pot Noodles though. ;-)

We were only talking yesterday about being able to get to more local talks and exhibitions, and actually joining the library so we can find out more about what's on around town, once we both properly retire and close the company down in a couple of months. Alan has already had his first State Pension payment and his bus pass arrived yesterday.

    1. It sounds as though you might have plenty of events to choose from in your area. We only have the one 'warm space' in the village although the library is also a good place to warm up. But...they don't have many chairs!
Yay! to Alan's bus pass! Happy adventuring ;)

  2. What a lovely thing to do, not only providing a warm space and tea, but a snack too. Just the sort of thing that an elderly person on their own or a young mum with a small child or 2 could do with. Great idea.

    1. Yes, indeed, there were quite a few older people taking advantage of the free drinks and the company. Young mums are welcome too but don't seem to be interested in mixing with the 'oldies' ...lol

  3. The warm space sounds like such a lovely place, especially with volunteers serving warm drinks and snacks! We don't have that where I live (it doesn't get cold enough, I suppose), but, in the summer, the library and senior centers are considered cool spaces as they have air conditioning. :)

  5. You asked if I was able to use discounted energy at the weekend in your last post on Gas etc.
Sadly no, we're not on that tariff but I do make sure I run equipment at off peak times.
I also have a smart meter that sits on my work table and lets me know when my cost per hour suddenly climbs - for instance when someone sneaks off and starts boiling a kettle !

    1. Thank you for your reply 😊 I noticed that Scottish Power are doing half price weekend energy too as well as British Gas and it does seem to help with the bills a bit. Yes, it's amazing how the monitor goes on amber when the kettle is switched on 😳
