Needs Must, Splashing the Air Con Cash

With global warming showing it's teeth in the hot spell this week, we felt we had made a wise decision in agreeing a few weeks ago to splash the savings cash on a mobile air con unit.  After careful consideration, and not quite having the right place to install a fixed one, we had chosen this one from B & Q...

It looks a bit ungainly perched on a stool but it does the job of keeping one room cool and inviting.  It appears to be costing around 25p  per hour to run and it will need to be on for quite a long time in the extreme heat.  We'll just have to suck up the cost as it will probably only be used for a few weeks in the summer.  The unit is heavy to lift but is on wheels so, once on the ground, can be moved easily and put in the corner of the big bedroom until the next time it's needed.  There is also a fan function when air con isn't needed.  The water container inside will need to be emptied about every 3 days.  Hopefully, not too messily!  We have ordinary fans for both bedrooms, neither of which make much difference at the moment. Extreme heat makes both of us feel ill.  I think Sue from My Quiet Life In Suffolk has it nailed with her use of ice packs and cold flannels!

How are you keeping cool?

In the early hours of this morning there was a little rain and distant thunder, and the forecast is for cooling temperatures over the next week.  Thank goodness, because we've had enough sun already
 thank you very much 😊

Thanks for popping in.  Do stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,
Angie 💗

  1. I'm thinking we may need an air-conditioner for our new extension next year... we're surviving so far. I've found sticking my head under a lukewarm shower brings instant relief!

  3. We just had to replace our 2 mobile units, shame they worked well and over 20 years old, these new one is less noisy.

  4. I'm jealous ... what a wise purchase. I have no fans, except for a big piece of cardboard that I sit wafting while I watch television. :-) I do have a cold filled 'hot water bottle' in the fridge, that is lovely on my back for about ten minutes, by then I have turned it back into a hot water bottle. I also have a pack of water based face wipes that are in the fridge ready for a wipe down when I can stand the heat no more.

    1. The heat has been horrendous, hasn't it, Sue. Maybe invest in a unit when you move into the new bungalow? The problem is that our home is so well insulated it keeps the heat in as much as the cold out. It's reached 30.5C in the house and as much as 33C in the South facing living room. The air con reduced it to 26C on that particular day.
      Stay cool!

  7. Sounds like you made a wise investment in your portable a/c, Angie. I hope it keep you nice and cool during your heatwave. When it gets really hot over here, I sometimes put a damp face towel in the freezer and then, place it on the back of my neck to cool off. :)

    1. Oooh thank you for the tip, Bless ! I didn't think to do that! I've used a muslin cloth wrung out in cold water but a few minutes in the freezer would make a big difference :)

  8. That was a wise investment, Angie. Hopefully it will keep the room cool enough for you. It looks like you may need it again at the end of this week.

Cooling off, bargains, saga and sport!

The past week seems to have been all about sport and trying to cool off.  Nights have been sticky, despite the fans in the bedrooms and slee...
