I think it was sometime last year when I wrote a post about our local Co-op suddenly closing and changing hands. Since then it has never quite regained its popularity. Stock has been poor, as in half empty shelves, pricy too. Only the petrol station and Post Office seemed to keep customers flowing slowly through the store.
Well....something similar has happened this last week, but in reverse. It has reopened as a....Co-op. This time the one with a blue and white member card rather than the Mid Counties one. Apparently, people turned up out of the blue to do 'till checks', ushering customers out and closing the store. It has now reopened as a fully stocked Co-op store.
I downloaded the App, reactivated my membership card, immediately getting a £1 off shopping voucher. I needed the Post Office counter service so we decided to take a look at the new store. Immediately, I spotted a box of 160 teabags with a yellow sticker, priced at £3.38. They have a decent date on them too. I snapped them up and got my £1 off making them £2.38

It's been much cooler this weekend, thank heavens, and it's been drizzling with rain since early afternoon. I really wish we could have a downpour. The allotment is suffering from drought. My sugar snap peas were doing well but have suddenly gone yellow and stopped producing, the strawberries have stopped too. Some of the beetroot has split and the brocolli is bolting. We just can't visit often enough to keep everything going. The only things we have picked over the last week have been the last of the radishes and spring onions. Pathetic....
At home, the cucumbers are almost ready, and I'm waiting for the tomatoes to begin ripening.

I'm glad your Co-op has reopened and seems to be doing well. We don't have them, here. I'm glad it has cooled off for you, as well. Hope your allotment does well now that the weather has cooled off.

DeleteWe have mostly East of England Co-op here, small shops in a few villages, larger called Solar in some small towns, but none closer than several miles away. The garage I often use on my way to town is the other national Co-op - I guess like your new shop - so doesn't take the green coloured card I have - I'm not sure they have any Co-op card at all.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to hear your local one has been taken over as they are handy to visit and often keep Post Offices going when no-one else will.
My cucumbers produced 5 and promptly shrivelled up!
I've never understood the different Co-op brands and often got them confused when we used to go on holiday. Yes, at least the post office is still there.

I like the 'blue' Co op best, although we have a number of green (east of England) ones round here too. In Leicester the one on my route home from school always did yellow stickering at 4pm Tuesday. I found many bargains then.

DeleteWe have two "blue" Co-ops near to us one in town quite biggish and used a lot and can get busy then a smaller one on a small housing estate which we use often when in that area. This smaller one has the best yellow stickers if we can get the timing right, also good offers just generally. It is a lifesaver for people on the estate as a bit remote from town and other shops if you have no car and public transport is erratic. That's good your shop is back to a proper Co-op. Regards Sue H

DeleteI used to shop at the Co-op regularly when we lived Wales, I still have my blue Co-op card on my phone app, but I've only ever used it once since we moved here as the Co-op is right on the outskirts of town. I used to get some great bargains and vouchers off my next spend.
ReplyDeleteThe rain yesterday afternoon was a very welcome relief, it's pleasantly cool here today and the garden is looking much happier.
It's lovely and cool here this morning which is fortunate as it's our village Carnival today. I dread the heat to come :(
DeleteWe have a yellow card Co-Op here in Belper, and its one of the nicest ones I've ever been in. Well laid out, lots of stock and the staff very friendly and helpful. Slightly more expensive, but I do use it, especially as you can park for 90 minutes for free and its right in the centre of town. We had a real downpour about 7pm last night, the garden looks better for it. Been to Chatsworth today and although I said to Alec I won't buy any plants, ended up getting a eau-de-cologne scented geranium. Take care. Xx
ReplyDeleteI've never seen an eau-de-cologne scented Geranium. I bet it smells lovely. We have a bitter lemon scented one with pink flowers and it's smells delicious! It's lovely and cool here today but we could really do with a proper downpour for the garden and allotment. Enjoy your day, Gill xx
