I've mentioned before that our village library has been refurbished and is much more welcoming as a result. At the moment they are running a free family history course and we decided to attend and give it a try. It takes place one day a week and begins at 10am ( so an early start for me these days!) and lasts for up to 3 hours. It is absolutely fascinating. I didn't realise that there are so many free resources on the internet, although physical copies of birth, death and marriage certificates will still cost £12.50 each π
We wanted to research Graham's family, his father's side in particular and it is rivetting!
Even better is that accessing Ancestry on the library computers is FREE. So far I have accessed census records as far back as 1871, found several new family members, and printed out the transcripts to read at home. They can be printed at the library for 15p per sheet, so it's much cheaper than paying for a home subscription to access the information. Each week we are given a sheet of information followed by an email at home with further details. We feel so very lucky to get all this free of charge, and we have two more sessions to go.

Next week the subject will be Military Records.....

When we walked into the library this week the lady on the desk called me over. She was just signing back in a book she thought I would like π
Yes...definitely! It looks right up my street .....

This week I have managed to get out into the sunshine for just 3 days for my vitamin D fix. It's just been far too cold and windy. Yesterday Gray went to the allotment for the day so I got stuck into lots of tasks that I had been putting off, cleaning the grease filter in the cooker hood, for example πwhich came up sparkling like new πI wiped down the kitchen cupboard doors on the top level (I will have to do the lower ones another day as my back was a bit delicate), cleaned the floor in the bathroom, then put on my shorts, took my lunch outside for half an hour, and sat in the sun.
In the afternoon I spent just over two hours making cards for the shop, which was so relaxing....
I have donated 172 so far this year, not counting the batch made this week which I have yet to take in. On Monday when I took in a new batch of 20, the basket in the shop contained just 3 cards. I was in the nick of time πI really don't want interest in them to wane by having a near empty basket, do I ! I'll take another batch in next week as soon as I can get there. Now I no longer have a car I'll have to ask Gray to drop me off as the shop is not within walking distance.

Today, at lunchtime, we are meeting our daughter and son-in-law at the pub in the village after she finishes work. Son-in-law is still awaiting results for job interviews and we can have a catch-up on all their news. The men will have hot beef cobs and a pint, I'll share a cheese bloomer with our daughter and have a glass of lemonade to go with it. Even tea is making my tongue sting at the moment. It must be the tannin. I'm totally off alcohol πI hope the D3 kick in soon.....
Thanks so much for popping in. Stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,
Angieπ
You have so many good ideas for cards - they are all lovely.
ReplyDeleteThat family history course sounds brilliant and free is even better
Thank you, Sue, and yes...we are really enjoying the course.
DeleteYour cards as always are beautiful, I hope you enjoyed your lunch. I have Simons book its great fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marlene. The get together was lovely. A cob, a soft drink and a jolly good chinwag!
DeleteHow lovely that the library is offering the free family history program and you can access the websites free of charge on the library's computers! That book looks like a good read. My daughter and I are trying to grow more of our own groceries.
ReplyDeleteYour cards are as lovely as always and I'm sure they are much appreciated by the charity shop and those who buy them.
Hope you have a lovely meet-up with your daughter and son-in-law.
Thank you, Bless, Friday lunch with our daughter was lovely.
DeleteIsn't it great to grow things you can eat from the garden. You can't get fresher than that!
I keep thinking I ought to check out the family on Ancestry...
ReplyDeletePerhaps your library has free access to Ancestry too. It's worth checking whether they have the library edition. We are really enjoying the course!
DeleteI'm catching up on blog reading having been in Cornwall for a week. I'm the keeper of family records so have birth/death certificates going back to my Gt. Granny. Dad's side is a bit vague on his paternal side, but I plod away at it when I'm in the mood. Do hope your health problems sort themselves soon. I'm waiting on a X-Ray for my feet, apparently I've got Freiberg Disease which is hereditary and makes the bones in your feet deform. But I keep going, moving as much as I can, plus there's always something to do. Take care. Xx
ReplyDeleteHow useful to have all the certificates! There is so much information on them, isn't there.
DeleteI haven't heard of Freiberg Disease but it sounds very painful, Gill. I hope your X-Ray appointment comes through quickly.
I hope your holiday was lovely, we LOVE Cornwall, (especially north Cornwall) and that you have come home refreshed and ready to go!
It sounds like you have found something really nice to do at the library that suits you both, and free as well. I think I may be a bit weird in that I have no interest in digging over old family records, after he retired my Dad loved it and happily managed to go back many, many generations and print all sorts of things off. Then they started zooming around the country visiting all sorts of long lost relatives, I remember feeling horrified I thought we had more than enough with a few aunties and cousins.
ReplyDeleteYour latest batch of cards looks very nice, you are doing really well keeping the shop supplied.
Re the family history thing: I cant think of anything worse than travelling around to meet long lost family either, Sue. As Gray is an only child he just wants to find out more about his grandparents and great grandparents. We know that his dad's brother had 13 children ! π¨ At the moment we are looking for names only. The talk is on military records this week which should be very interesting to say the least π€
DeleteThank you for the positive comment about my cards ☺️
