Growing Things, Shopping Jiggle, A TREAT! and MORE Increases in Bills.....

Another batch of  a dozen cards were dropped off at the Hospice shop on Thursday.  Our daughter came to visit and we took her to the allotment where we picked lots of delicious pale pink forced rhubarb for crumbles.   I popped a bagful over to our new neighbours in the bungalow opposite too.

Things are really growing now that we have some lovely warm weather and it's kept Gray busy.  He still feels guilty about losing his job and I catch him browsing job sites 😏 He's really not as fit as he was and needs to slow down but the loss of income has hit him hard.  We can manage but don't have a lot left for luxuries.  Thank heavens for our emergency fund.  I really don't want to touch it because it's our safety net and we wouldn't be able to replace it if we did.   I've factored one treat per month into the household budget because I really would like a bit of fun in the coming months.  In fact...tonight is the treat for April!  I'll tell you more in my next post but it involves going out with our Daughter and Son-in Law this evening😀

---------------

We usually have a Sainsbury's delivery once a week which I keep to within a £50 budget, leaving £5 for odds and ends that I forgot, or extra eggs, milk etc  I want to incorporate more salmon into our diet (it's once a month at the moment) so I've decided to change the way I shop.  We will now have a delivery every two weeks thus saving £2 delivery charge.  The weather is much improved so we feel able to shop around a bit.  The £4 per month saved will almost pay for 2 more salmon fillets (around £4.50 a pack) and I will be ordering tinned salmon too.  Next Wednesday's order will be for double the usual heavy & bulky items, as we do struggle to carry those, plus food for as many days as I can manage.  I need to keep the order under £80 which will leave me £30 to shop elsewhere for bargains.  I can see that Lidl will be selling 15p packs of veg for  Easter.  I wonder if Sainsbury's will follow suit ? Both stores are very close together so I can soon find out next week.......

Our water bill came in yesterday and it has increased substantially, as expected, but we also had a letter from the Housing Association saying that the buildings insurance has gone up and the amount on our rent review letter is wrong 👀 What next????

-------------

Thanks so much for popping in.  Do stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,

Angie 💗

  1. Factoring a treat every month is such a good idea. Something to look forward to, enjoy at the time, and remember afterwards. Hope your allotment thrives for you this year.

  2. I can never understand why people don’t take advantage of cheap veg when things are tight for many right now. You can do so much with it! Yet…you should see the queues at our local Macdonalds, especially on a Sunday!

I’ll be interested to read about April’s treat!
Have a good weekend! ( Sal’s Snippets blog)

    1. I agree, Sal, it's a 'no brainer' to buy the cheap veg when it's on offer. I guess 'fast food' is too tempting.

  3. I have a monthly delivery from Sainsbury but I'm meaner than you - I make sure I get a 6am-10am slot for £1! They never deliver before 8am. I like to have frozen food delivered and also the bits that Lidl don't sell.

    1. I have noticed the £1 slots but we don't tend to wake up before 9am, especially if we've had sleepless nights 😶‍🌫️ It's certainly a way to save a bit more money though 😀

  4. I'm looking forward to the cheap veg - most of which can be frozen. I expect all the supermarkets will follow suit. I nipped into Lidl today as I had a free drink on my app - so I chose a 6 pack of their diet cola which sells for £1.99. I could've kicked myself at their last freebie - free veg - of which I chose Brussel sprouts - forgetting they sold large sacks of potatoes which were also included in the free veg offer!!

  5. Thank you for the mention of cheap veg at Lidls I checked the Aldi website and they'll have 6 veg, including broccoli, for 15p from 15th but only for 4 days so need to time it right.
Just renewed my house insurance for a saving of £7 on last year - every little helps!

    1. Thank you for the update!
Well done on the saving, Sue, ours has increased and we have no choice but to go with the choice of the housing association 😮‍💨

  6. I shall be on the look out for the cheap veg, expect Aldi and Morrisons will follow suit, although I pick up a lot of YS stuff. I will freeze what I can. Our council rates have gone up, but are still lower now we are in a smaller house and our Talk Talk bill has gone up, that came today. Enjoy your trip out. Xx

    1. I think we all need to tighten our belts over the coming months, Gill, things won't get better soon.
I hope you are enjoying today's bit of sunshine! xx

  7. I'll definitely be getting some of the cheap veg when it arrives in stores. It will be mostly prepped and frozen for future months. I have switched to mostly tinned salmon now, or occasionally frozen fillets from Aldi which are much cheaper then the fresh. The tinned salmon when mashed and mixed with spring or red onion and mayonnaise makes a lovely sandwich filling for one lunch and a couple of large fish cakes (mixed with leftover mashed potatoes and dipped in flour) for two evening meals. It works out so much cheaper than the fillets and is actually healthier for you with the bones and skin all mashed to smithereens so I can't see it.

    1. We love a salmon sarnie as well. I usually add sliced tomato, lettuce, cucumber, onion or whatever we have in the fridge. Great idea for fishcakes too, thank you Sue :) I don't like the skin but I'm happy to mash the bones in!

  8. I will be looking out for the cheap veg deals, they are such a bargain and can be easily used in so many meals. Salmon is one of my favourite fish to eat and we should have it more often here.
Wishing you a good year in your allotment - fresh young stalks of rhubarb are delicious.
