A Small Shop, St George's Day, Forgotten Eggs & Another Meal Plan......

I hope you all had a lovely Easter and enjoyed the bit of sunshine as well as the much needed rain for the gardens.  We had a lovely Easter Sunday lunch at our Daughter's house followed by the original Charlie & the Chocolate Factory film on TV with Gene Wilder.  Those were the days, eh ! Do you remember it?

Yesterday, we wanted a couple of tomato plants from the local nurseries and decided to do this week's top up shop afterwards to save another journey as well as a drop of petrol 😊

This is what we bought with the the remaining £8.97 food money:

I know we could have saved £1.95 by not buying the water but I do drink a lot of water during the day and our tap water smells so strongly of chlorine that I can't drink it.  Gray drinks tap water with a drop of squash in it so that it tastes ok, but I prefer plain water.  There were an extra 10 Nectar points on bananas so I bought just one !

The total came to £8.44 leaving just 53p in the budget.

We now have just our Nectar points to spend for the rest of the month.  I have £18.20 worth of which I can spend £17.50 so that will constitute our food budget until 1st May.  I will need to spent some of that on protein like fish or meat for Gray, but I'll see what's on offer when I need to shop again.  Meanwhile I have the makings of meals for the next few days:

Quorn Chilli & rice
Spicy beanburger baps & salad
Cheese & leek pasty (home made)
Pasta bake
Cod & vegetable traybake

There are 4 eggs left, dated 21st April 😟 I forgot I had them.  I'll have to do the 'float' test and we'll eat those tomorrow if they are ok 👍Plus there is about 6oz cheddar cheese.
Some of the cheap Easter veg has been prepped and frozen for later including a swede, and I roasted some potatoes in the air fryer to reheat at a later date.  Anything to make my life easier!  More prepping will be done tomorrow if I have time.....

Thanks so much for popping in.  Stay safe and well wherever you happen to be,

Angie💗

  1. We have a Brita water filter jug, which takes away all the taste from the water, I won't drink from the tap, it's not a cheap outlay, I then pop filter water in a bottle to go in fridge, hubby loves his water chilled.

    1. We used to have a filter jug but the cartridges got so expensive to buy that it was cheaper to buy basic bottled water. We gave the jug away.

  2. I got a water filter jug that fits in the fridge door - it was bought mainly because of the coffee machine that the family got me 2 years ago, as it's really hard water here, but it is one of my favourite things as the cold water is lovely to drink . This bungalow has the worst water that I've had in any place I've lived so it is really needed.

  3. I'm so glad we have moved up north, our water in Oxfordshire and Berkshire was awful. In Wales and now Lancashire it is drinkable straight from the tap.
You have a good amount of Nectar points and a little cash in case you go over, so you should be fine for the rest of the month even buying some meat for Graham. Your meals for the next few days sound lovely, and your eggs will be fine, I have eaten eggs a lot older than that, and supermarkets have to have a very rigid dating system on their eggs. I always store my eggs in the fridge until the day I am about to use them, so I have gone weeks over in the past.

    1. I do wish we had lovely tasting water. It would be so much cheaper.
Thanks for the egg tip, Sue. I know you kept chickens and know what you are talking about! lol... They were fine and we ate them on toast :)

  4. I, too, store eggs in the fridge and I've had no problems even if past the "best by" dates stamped on the egg cartons. You are doing very well with your grocery shopping, staying under budget, this month.
